Mad Dog Woodworking Dedicated to fine products and sustainability

I find wood that is unused, abandoned, not usable for its original purpose, or salvaged. Often the character of the project is hidden, it needs to be cleaned and sanded to reveal its intrinsic beauty.

I am comfortable using a variety of finishes: epoxy, polyurethane, lacquer, and oils. My favorite is Tung Oil, it is durable, sustainable, natural, and nontoxic. Tung oil finish is very hard, long lasting, and easy to maintain.

I started working with wood when I was given a block of live edge Myrtle that was sold for firewood. After cleaning and sanding, it got several coats of epoxy and a simple cedar base. It still sits in my front yard, an invitation for all to sit and relax.

I continue to discover wood at wood lots on the Oregon coast. My entire extended family has been gifted by the pieces I created as I honed my skills. As my love of the process and the outcomes grows, I find that there is a demand for the work I enjoy.

I continue searching through wood lots on the Oregon Coast looking for wood. Wood that with work will reveal its inner beauty allowing me to create lovely projects.

I hope you too will find something that will enhance your home, yard, or office.

A passion for sustainable woodworking

Sourcing

This slab of American Elm was cut 25 years ago to be used in a ship repair project. It was left in the mud. I acquired it and three others at a bargain price

Creating beautiful furniture

The slab had to be cleaned, planed to a uniform depth, and sanded to reveal its inner beauty.

Built to last

The finished table has been in use on my patio for three years. It is my very first large project. The slab was finished in Rubio Monocoat, and cut to dimensions fitting its use. The legs are from the same material, the stretcher is Myrtle from the same mill.
